Episode 116: Vanishing Acts

Part Four of Four

Dr. Gary Sorensen watched as Hillary hung up the pay phone in the fifth floor corridor. She turned to him and he hugged her.

Gary: (as they broke the embrace) Well?

Hillary: He wasn't in his room; apparently he went to a play. I'll try his cell phone, but if he's in a play he's probably got it turned off.

Gary: And Angela?

Hillary: (shaking her head) No. She’s not answering her cell phone.

Gary: Any idea where she could be?

Hillary: No. She was invited to the party like the rest of the town, but you know Angela… she was determined not to go.

Gary: Well, you left messages, that’s all you can do for now.

Hillary: I know. I just pray they don't hear about it somewhere else before then. (Pause) I hate to admit, but I'm relieved. I shouldn't feel that way, but I do.

Gary: What do you mean?

Hillary: I can put this off for a little longer. I have some time to figure out how I'm going to say it, how I'm going to get the words out.

Gary: You will. You will. You're probably the only one who could. You're strong, probably the strongest one in this family.

Hillary: I don't know about that.

Gary: I do. You've always taken care of this family when we needed it most, pulled things together, kept us going. You did it when your mother died and when your father suffered that terrible depression after her death. And who got Monica through when she was going through hell during her marriage to Eric Lassiter? Not to mention Angela and Melody's various crises and the disasters I found myself in? You. You've been our center, our rock, the one who always does what needs to be done no matter how tough it is. You'll find the words. You'll pull us through. And you'll do it because that's who you are.

Hillary: (smiling weakly) I appreciate that. But if we get through this it'll be because we did it as a family. That's always been our rock and our center more than any one person. That's our strength and we're lucky to have it. A lot of people wouldn't at times like this.

Gary: I know. I've been thinking about Kevin and his father. I wonder how he's going to take the news about his son. Their relationship was so bitter and combative... so full of anger. Kevin had nothing but contempt for his father and Mr. Lassiter definitely had issues about his son being gay.

Hillary: I know that there was a scene when he saw you and Kevin dancing.

Gary: Yes and it was rather ugly. But Mr. Lassiter apologized for that. He was trying to reach out to Kevin, he said he wanted to work things out between them. Kevin didn't believe him; he thought his father was playing some sort of game with him to appease his wife Natalie. And yet, he wanted to have a relationship with his father; he needed to have it. I know what it's like to have a loving relationship with your parents, I know how important it's been to my life. It's just a shame that Kevin never knew what it was like to have that, just like it's a shame Mr. Lassiter never had the chance to really love his son.

Hillary: Whatever he and Kevin's issues, I'm sure Barton Lassiter loved his son. And unfortunately now he's going to realize how much he's lost.

Gary: And it is a loss. A terrible, terrible loss.

Hillary: (stroking her uncle's troubled face) Yes, and not just for the Lassiters.

Gary: Hillary, you can't compare my losing Kevin to his families. I barely knew the man; tonight was only our second date. He had just become part of my life.

Hillary: I know. But, I saw you together at the party. I saw how you two were connecting, how happy you were to be with him. I haven't seen that look on your face in a very long time... maybe never. Yes, Kevin may have been new to your life, but that doesn't mean you aren't hurt by no longer having him in it.

Gary: But isn't that selfish?

Hillary: How is that selfish?

Gary: I lost my youngest niece. Someone I have known since the day she was born, that I used to rock to sleep when I baby sat her, that I saw grow up into a beautiful young woman and have a lovely child of her own. I loved her and I grieve her. But I can't help but think about losing someone I just was getting to know... and wanted to know better. (He slumped against the wall) You know how I've lived my life. The one thing I was good at when it came to men was picking the wrong one. And I did it, one after another. I've dated a lot of men, slept with even more. It always seemed like that was enough. Kevin was the first guy that made me think that maybe it wasn't. (Pause) I don't know if I'm capable of having a relationship or if I even really wanted one. And I don't know if Kevin was ready to date again after losing Alec Stone. Let's face it, with our histories the odds were against us. (Tears brimming in his eyes) But I wanted to try. I wanted to see if there was a chance. And I hate that I never got that chance. It hurts that I never got that chance.

Hillary: And you think feeling that way is wrong?

Gary: (wiping the tears from his eyes) It just feels wrong to mourn someone I barely knew when I lost someone who was so much more in my life.

Hillary: I don't see it that way at all. There is nothing wrong with mourning someone you loved... or someone you had the possibility of loving. To me, it just shows what a warm and compassionate man you are. You might have doubted the capability of sustaining a long-term relationship, but I never doubted it. Not once. You just needed the right man to come along and bring that capability out in you.

Gary: (smiling slightly at his niece's kind words) Maybe. I just wonder if my one and only chance is now gone?

Melody and A.J. then appeared in the corridor. Melody, a wide grin on her face, ran to her sister and uncle.

Melody: Hillary, Uncle Gary! There you are. Have you spoken to Daddy or Angela yet?

Hillary: (shaking her head) No, not yet.

Melody: So they don’t know about Monica?

Gary: No. But...

Melody: (clasping her hands together) I’m glad I got here in time.

Hillary: (confused) Melody, I know it's going to be hard to hear, but we have to tell Dad and Angie have to know as soon as possible.

Melody: No, you don't understand. We don't have to tell them anything.

Gary: Why not? Has something changed?

Melody: Yes! Monica is alive!

Hillary: What?! Are you certain?

Melody: Yes! And she wasn't hurt when the car went in the river.

Gary: How do you know? Have you seen her?

Melody: Not yet. I had to come find you first before you said anything to Dad or Angela.

Gary: Then how do you know it's true?

A.J.: My brother told us. He captured Danny James and Monica was with him and unharmed. She's in the ER.

Hillary: (as she and Melody hugged, then pulled Gary into their embrace) That is wonderful, wonderful news! We have to get to ER and make sure she's okay.

Melody: I know I won't be satisfied until I see her with my own eyes.

Monica: (asked as she walked into the corridor) Will this do?

A.J. watched, smiling with satisfaction as the Sorensen family were reunited in a messy, teary round of hugs and kisses. Thank God, he sighed. Thank God something turned out right in this mess. But as happy as he was about Monica, and he was happy, he couldn't help but think about Kevin, feel the pain in his heart grow heavier with every moment. What about Kevin? When was he going to turn up? Would the Lassiters have their own happy ending?

* * * * * *

Nigel stared at his father, his question ringing in his ears.

Nigel: What did you say?

Quentin: What did you mean about losing them both? Who else was lost tonight?

Nigel had hidden his love for Kevin Lassiter for so long, locking that piece of his heart away for most of his adult life. But now that he'd lost everything, now that both Kevin and Monica were gone in one cruel swoop, keeping that secret seemed pointless, meaningless. He really didn't even have the strength to keep that secret anymore. He didn't even really want to try.

Quentin: Nigel? Aren't you going to answer my question?

Nigel: Dad, I... (The door swung open and Monica walked in) Oh, my God! Monica!

Monica: (as he pulled her into his arms) Nigel...

Nigel: (prolonging the embrace, just enjoying the feel of her in his arms again) Oh, my God! You're alive! You're alive! Oh thank God, you're alive.

Monica: Yes, I'm alive and I'm fine. I'm sorry if I frightened all of you.

Quentin: (genuinely pleased to see Monica alive and well) There's no need to apologize, dear. We're just glad you survived that terrible experience.

Monica: (as Nigel stroked her face and hair and kissed her intermittently) Yes, I was lucky. Very lucky.

Nigel: (guiding her to the bed and sitting down next to her) Sit down. Sit down.

Quentin: Are you sure you're okay, dear? Did the doctors check you out when you were brought in?

Monica: No. I was feeling fine; I didn't really give them the chance. I just wanted to get to you, Nigel... and my sisters. I knew you would've heard what happened by now and I didn't want you to worry.

Nigel: (nodding, then hugged her again) Well, we were worried, so terribly worried. But you really should have the doctors look at you.

Monica: I don't need them too. Believe me, I'm okay.

Quentin: Eric Lassiter said the car went into the river and sank very quickly. How were you able to get out and get to shore?

Monica: I don't know. The whole thing is so fuzzy after we went off the bridge. All I know is that I'm alive because of Danny James.

Nigel: What do you mean you're alive because of Danny James? Dad said he's responsible for this; he took you and Kevin hostage and forced you to try and get him out of town.

Monica: He did do that. But, he also pulled me out of the river. When he did, I wasn't breathing, but he gave me CPR. He saved my life. I wouldn't be here if it weren't for him.

Quentin: Your life would've never have been in jeopardy to begin with if it weren't for him. He stole jewels from the Lassiter Estate during the party tonight and got caught. That's why he ran and took hostages with him.

Monica: I realize that. But he says he didn't steal those jewels and acted as he did because he was afraid. He knew no one would believe him because of his record and he just panicked.

Quentin: Monica, the jewels were found in his car... and a witness saw him leaving the room from where they were stolen.

Monica: I know all that. But...

At that moment, a cell phone’s chirp interrupted them. Quentin pulled it out of his suit pocket and looked at the readout.

Quentin: It’s your mother. I had called her to give her the news about Monica, but she wasn’t answering. (He smiled) Now I’ll have good news. Excuse me.

He walked out.

Nigel: Okay, about Danny James. Surely you don't believe him. You actually think this man, after all he's done is innocent?

Monica: Nigel, he saved my life. Despite all that he was facing, he couldn't keep running, he could've left me in that river to die, but he didn't. He risked his life and his freedom to save me... and Kevin.

Nigel: (realizing he'd actually forgotten about Kevin) Kevin! So, he’s okay too?

Monica: (hesitating) I don't know.

Nigel: (desperately) What do you mean you don't know. Weren't you there when Danny got Kevin out of the river?

Monica: (her bottom lip started to tremble) Nigel, he never got the chance. He was about to, but Eric arrived and he wanted to arrest Danny. We tried to tell him that Kevin hadn't been found, but Eric didn't care, he wouldn't listen. All he wanted was to arrest Danny. Nothing else mattered to him.

Nigel: (his mind reeling) Then, Kevin is still out there?

Monica: Yes. I'm afraid so.

Tears flowed from Monica's eyes. She hated delivering this news; she hated having to tell her husband what he'd lost tonight. And if she didn't know it before, she knew by the horror-stricken look on Nigel's face just how much he'd loved Kevin Lassiter. And still did.

As they stood in the waiting room, Mama J. and Abby looked expectantly as Darian came out of the ER. Jessica Jackson was also there, standing a few feet away. They all approached Darian.

Mama J.: Well? How is he? Is Danny, all right?

Darian: I just spoke to Jeff Madison; he’s on duty tonight. Danny is damned lucky. He's going to be fine.

Abby: But I thought he'd been shot in the head.

Darian: It just grazed his skull. He's got a bad flesh wound and a concussion, but he should be okay. He'll be in the hospital for a couple of days, but he'll make a complete recovery.

Mama J.: (hugging Abby) Thank the Lord!

Darian: (with a slight smile) Well, he's got a hard head. That's probably what saved his life.

Mama J.: Can we see him?

Darian: Not yet. He's still unconscious and he has to be transferred to a private room. And...

Mama J.: (noting the troubled look on Darian's face) And what? I thought you said he'd be okay.

Darian: He will be. Physically. But Danny is in a lot of legal trouble. Captain Stone just got here and he and Evan Maitland are putting some heavy security on him.

Jessica: After what he's done, can you blame them?

Abby: There you go, Jessica, assuming the worst.

Jessica: Of course, I've learned to do that after years of witnessing the James brothers create havoc in this family. I didn't think Danny could top his brother's crimes, but he did it without even trying hard.

Darian: Jessie, please. Let's not make this situation worse than it is.

Jessica: How it can get any worse? It's bad enough that Nathan is about to go on trial for murder, now Danny goes on his own crime spree, ranging from robbery to evading arrest to kidnapping two innocent people. And if Kevin Lassiter isn't found alive and well, you can add murder. I just hope this is enough for this family to realize that we need to wash our hands of both of them.

Abby: (turning to Mama J.) Why did you call her here? She hates Danny, she always has.

Jessica: Believe me, Abby, this is the last place I want to be. But I'm here, because like it or not, we are family.

Abby: Then why don't you try offering some support rather than tearing Danny and Nathan down every chance you get!?

Jessica: Mama J and Darian know that I am here for them in any way I can. I feel the same way about you, Abby. But I won't lie and I won't pretend that I don't think we'd be better off without Danny and Nathan in our lives. Unfortunately, I know Mama J. won't give up on them. She never does with the people she loves. Sometimes it's a blessing and sometimes it's a curse.

Sabrina: (walking up) Mama J., I heard the news. Danny's here in the hospital?

Mama J.: Yes, Sabrina. And he's going to be all right. He'll have to be in the hospital for a few days, but he'll be okay.

Sabrina: (squeezing Mama J.'s hand, then looking up at Jessica) That is good news. Hey, Jessie. I didn’t know you were here.

Jessica: I arrived just a bit ago.

Mama J.: I'm glad you're here... I was just going to come find you.

Sabrina: Why? To tell me about Danny?

Mama J.: Yes, and to ask you to represent him.

Sabrina: What?

Jessica: Mama J., you can't be serious!

Mama J.: Sabrina, I know you've got a busy caseload, with Nathan's murder trial and Gloria's divorce, but Danny is going to need a lawyer. A good one. Can you represent him? Please?

Sabrina: (hesitating, a reluctant look on her face) I'm sorry, Mama J., I can't. I just can't do that.

As they stood outside of Nigel’s hospital room, A.J. Lassiter turned to Melody Sorensen, a regretful look on his face.

A.J.: Melody, I’m sorry.

Melody: About what? Monica is safe and back with us. What is there to be sorry about?

A.J.: Because I know this isn’t the right time, but I have to go.

Melody: Go? Where?

A.J.: Back to the Lassiter Estate. I don’t know if the family has heard about Kevin yet. Someone has to tell them. I don’t want them finding out if some reporters show up asking questions or something.

Melody: (shaking her head) Kevin. (Tears pooled in her eyes) I was so happy about Monica that I completely forgot about Kevin, about what you’re going through. A.J., I’m so sorry. How could I be so thoughtless?

A.J.: Melody, you loved your sister and you’re happy that she’s alive and unharmed. You have nothing to feel bad about. As for Kevin, he is not gone. He’s out there; he just hasn’t been found yet. The Coast Guard will find him. And just as soon as I tell the family what has happened, I’m going to join the search.

Melody: What? A.J., you can’t!

A.J.: And why not?

Melody: I realize you’re worried about your cousin, so am I. But let the Coast Guard and the police handle things. They’re professionals.

A.J.: Melody, I am not going to stand by and do nothing while Kevin’s life is at risk. He needs my help and he’s going to get it.

Melody: A.J., you’re upset, that’s understandable and I know you want to feel as if you’re doing something, but the last thing your family needs on top of Kevin missing is for you to be in danger as well.

A.J.: Melody, I think I’m pretty capable. I can handle myself; you should know that by now.

Melody: Is that what you thought before you got yourself shot facing those drug dealers? Or when you were nearly run over by a car in your attempt to solve Candice Dailey’s murder? And lest we forget, being kidnapped by that mobster, Victor Gianelli?

A.J.: (bitterly) Thanks for the confidence, Melody.

Melody: This is not about whether I have confidence in you. I do. I believe in you and I know that you can accomplish anything when you put your mind to it! But you keep putting yourself in unnecessary danger and here you are doing it again!

A.J.: I don’t call trying to find my cousin putting myself in unnecessary danger. I happen to think his life is worth a little risk even if you don’t.

Melody: That isn’t how I meant it and you know it!

A.J.: What you meant or what you didn’t mean really doesn’t matter right now, Melody. I am going to go back to the mansion and give my family yet another piece of bad news. Then I’m going to do what I can to bring Kevin home. There’s nothing you can do to get me to change my mind.

Melody: But, A.J….!

A.J.: I don’t need this from you, Melody, not now. This is not a debate or a discussion.

Melody: (as A.J. started to walk away) A.J., wait a minute. Let me tell Hillary and Uncle Gary where I’m going and I’ll come with you.

A.J.: I don’t have time to wait! Besides you just want to work on me to do what you want and that’s just a waste of both our times.

Melody: A.J., please….!

A.J.: Damn it Melody, stay here! The only thing you’re doing is standing in my way and that’s the last thing I need right now. Just leave me alone!

A.J. stormed away.

Christina had been dreading this topic, but she knew that eventually her father was going to get into it. Unfortunately it was unavoidable.

Christina: Daddy, there is nothing going between Darian Jackson and I.

Christopher: Really? Isn’t working with you on the Nathan James case?

Christina: (warily) Yes, but....

Christopher: Did you really think you could hide this from me? Did you think I wouldn’t find out?

Christina: You act as if I was keeping a secret.

Christopher: Weren't you? Because with all the phone conversations we’ve had about Nathan James’ case since I’ve been away, you never once mentioned that Dr. Jackson was involved. (Pause) I phoned Glenn Dailey about a convention I’m attending in a few weeks and he mentioned it in passing. He assumed I knew. Fortunately I was able to pretend that I did so I didn’t look foolish. Why didn’t you tell me?

Christina: It’s a new development. He only became involved again after Nathan came out of his coma and you and I have spoken only very briefly since then. If you recall, you were on your way to a meeting and you barely said two words to me.

Christopher: (nodding) Okay, I’ll give you that. But why is he involved in the case and since when do you take it upon yourself to rescind my orders? I may have been away, but I’m still in charge of this case. Any such decisions should have gone through me.

Christina couldn’t tell her father that Darian was involved in the case because he’d basically blackmailed her into it by threatening to tell everyone that she, because Darian had been the one asking, had refused to perform the tests that revealed that Nathan had been poisoned and not suffered a heart attack. Of course in return for his getting involved with the case again, Darian had let her take the credit for performing the tests and saving Nate’s life and Christina had agreed to not to report Darian drawing Nathan’s blood and testing it himself, a tactic that was unethical and could get him disciplined by the hospital board, even if it did result in saving Nathan’s life.

Christina: I know, but there really wasn’t time. After it was discovered that Nathan had been poisoned and didn’t have a heart attack, he reacted immediately to the antidote to the Qualamethite I’d given him. When he regained consciousness, it was apparent that he wanted Darian as his physician. After all, he has been the boy's doctor all of his life. So, for the patient's comfort, I decided to bring Dr. Jackson back on board. Besides, Darian was removed because it was thought he was being neglectful and missed something with resulted in Nathan’s heart attack. Since that isn't true, it really wasn’t fair to keep him off the case.

Christopher: I suppose you’re right. (Pause) And I guess congratulations are in order.

Christina: What do you mean?

Christopher: You found out he’d been poisoned with that drug and that there was no heart attack. If you hadn’t of, he probably would’ve died. (Pause) But how did you know to perform those particular tests? Qualamethite and drugs like it are hard to detect unless that’s what you’re looking for.

Christina: (shrugging) I followed a hunch, I guess. The police said there had been threats on the boy’s life. Nathan James had been perfectly healthy before this and I just couldn’t believe that Darian could’ve missed something on a patient he’d been caring for most of his medical career. There didn’t seem to be any physical reason for the heart attack. I did some research on drugs that could cause heart attacks and did the proper tests.

It was a plausible and perfectly believable story. It should be since Christina had gone over the details in her head enough.

Christopher: Well that was quite a hunch, my dear. And very ingenious of you. (He pulled his daughter into his arms, hugging her) I’m proud of you. You are really blossoming into quite a wonderful doctor. I guess you’ve learned a few things from me.

Christina: I guess so. (Pause) Thank you, Daddy. That was a very sweet thing for you to say.

Christopher: Hey, you’re a very talented and beautiful young woman. You deserve those accolades and more.

Tears sprang into Christina’s eyes as her father beamed at her. It was partially because she was overjoyed at seeing the pride and joy he had on his face at her accomplishments and partially because she really hadn’t done anything to deserve his praise.

Christopher: I hope Dr. Jackson took notes. I doubt if he could’ve come up with something like that.

Christina: Daddy, he is a very good doctor. He’s very good with his patients and the staff seems to really have a high opinion him.

Christopher: Well, I admit he seems to have made a name for himself as an ER doctor, but he’s hardly in your professional league. But no matter, I just don’t like the young man. He’s arrogant and headstrong. And he has little respect for his superiors. You must remember how insubordinate he was to Glenn and myself.

Christina: (realizing that was the first time she’d met Darian, which was only a few days ago) But it was a tense situation for him. Someone he considered family was very ill and he was getting the blame for it. I think being a little testy in that situation is no surprise.

Christopher: I suppose. But maybe he should learn to control his emotions. (Pause) I hope he hasn’t been making things difficult for you.

Christina: It’s been okay.

Of course it had been anything but. She and Darian had been at each other throats from the start and nothing had changed that. He’d seem to take every chance he could to antagonize and irritate her. Except for that moment when he’d held her in that storage closet when she’d felt so trapped, that moment where he’d talked her down from her claustrophobic hysteria and made her feel safer than she had in a very long time.

Christopher: Meaning he has made things difficult for you.

Christina: Daddy, I said it’s been okay. Darian’s not the easiest man to work with, but it doesn’t matter. We’re not going to be on this case that much longer anyway. Nathan’s recovery should be speedy. He’ll be released from the hospital in a week at most.

Christopher: Do you really think I’m going to put up with Dr. Jackson for that long? As far as I’m concerned, he’s off the case now.

Christina: (startled) But why?

Christopher: Christina, we don’t need him, we never did. You’ve proven that by handling the case without his help. And I really have very little patience for him impertinence. I’m sure that hasn’t changed since I last spoke to the man.

Christina: Maybe we don’t need him, but the patient does. I told you that he is very close to Nathan James and it was important to him that Darian was on the case.

Christopher: (dryly) I’m sure the James boy will get over his disappointment. Besides, he should be more concerned about how he’s going to survive life in prison for murder.

Panic rose in Christina’s throat; she knew what Darian’s reaction would be to be dumped from the case, which was directly against the deal they’d made. He’d no doubt be so angry he’d reveal everything, expose her. He would get in trouble for his behavior, but she was more concerned about being publicly embarrassed and facing her father’s wrath. It wasn’t very often he was proud or pleased about something she’d done and less when he’d told her about it. The shame and the embarrassment was something she just didn’t want to deal with it.

Christopher: Look, I’ll handle it; you won’t have to get your hands dirty. (Pause) I’ll tell him myself first thing in the morning.

Christina: Daddy, please, I… (The phone rang; Christina reached over to the end table and answered it) Hello? (Pause as she listened to the other voice on the line) Darian? (She noted the sour look on her father's face) I really don’t think now is a good time to talk. (Pause) What?

Christopher looked up as his daughter’s brow furrowed.

Christopher: Christina, what’s going on?

Christina: (gasping) You’re kidding? In the hospital? Was anyone hurt? (Pause) And Nathan? How is he? (Pause) Thank God for that.

Christopher: (standing) Christina, what is going on?!

Christopher watched as Christina listened to what Darian had to say, shaking her head in disbelief and gasping in shock. She asked a few worried and concerned questions before hanging up.

Christina: I don’t believe it. I just don’t believe it.

Christopher: Well, what happened!? You mentioned Nathan.

Christina: Yes.

Christopher: He hasn't had a setback has he?

Christina: No, he’s fine. I mean as fine as can be expected under the circumstances.

Christopher: Under what circumstances?

Christina: No. It seems Nathan is the only one who came out of this unscathed. Someone tried to murder him in the hospital.

Christopher: Again? How many times has someone tried to kill that kid?

Christina: Three… or four, I think. At this point who’s counting? Anyway, a hitman came in with a gun and tried to shoot the kid… turned the hospital into the OK Corral.

Christopher: My God! Was anyone hurt?

Christina: No. Darian says everyone, including Nathan, escaped relatively unscathed.

Christopher: (grimly) Darian says, does he? (Pause) Well, we’ll be the judges of that.

Christina: What do you mean?

Christopher: Put on something suitable for work. You and I are going down to the hospital.

Christina: But why? According to Darian, Nathan is fine.

Christopher: I don’t care what Darian Jackson says. We'll check on our patient ourselves. As for Dr. Jackson, he’s no longer on this case… and he’s going to find that out tonight.

As they stood in the solarium, regret coursing through her, Nikki Lassiter turned to Richie Stone.

Nikki: Richie, I’m sorry.

Richie: (standing alongside Marc and Nina) Nikki, what were you thinking!? What made you decide to give James Greyhawk the boot now!?

Nikki: Richie, I thought you’d be happy about it. Just a few minutes ago you said you hated me being anywhere near Greyhawk.

Richie: I did… and I do. But you convinced me that we had to keep up with our plan, that you being close to James and getting him to trust you was the only way to get the proof that he killed Candice. And we’ve accomplished a lot already, like finding out about Candice’s diary. Sure, we didn’t get it, but only because James stole it from us.

Nina: Wait a minute! You think James was the person who stole the diary from us?

Nikki: It’s just a hunch. We have no evidence.

Richie: No hard evidence, but with some investigating, we could find some. (Pause) Which makes your decision, Nikki, to end things with James even more baffling. Why did you do it?

Nikki: Richie, I just couldn’t stand to be around him anymore. I knew that James was a bit of a snob and an elitist, but hearing him talk to Marc and Nina so cruelly and with such mean-spiritedness was more than I could stand. I just can’t tolerate someone who could be so malicious.

Marc: Nina, you did this because of us?

Nikki: Of course. You’re not only my best friends, you’re my family. You mean as much to me as my big brother Jonas or my cousin Kevin. Why wouldn’t I stand up for you?

Nina: Nikki, we appreciate that. And you know we feel the same way, but really shouldn’t have done something so drastic, especially with so much at stake.

Marc: Nina’s right. What Greyhawk said meant nothing. We don’t let jerks like him get to us. Don’t risk everything over a few words.

Nikki: You’re saying that James belittling and insulting you didn’t hurt your feelings? That it meant nothing to you to be treated like dirt!?

Marc: We’ve had more enjoyable experiences, sure. (Pause) But you shouldn’t have let it ruin our plans. I thought it was important that you spend time with James and get him to trust you so you can get evidence against him. You shouldn't have tossed it aside because Greyhawk was being Greyhawk.

Nina: Okay, maybe I over-reacted, maybe I shouldn’t have been so hot headed, but you know sometimes I look before I leap.

Richie: Oh, I’m well aware of that. The problem is what do we do now? How do we get the evidence against James if we don’t have someone inside? What does this mean for Nathan!?

Nikki: I don’t know… I don’t know what it means.

Richie: Well we’ve got to come up with something. Nathan needs us… he’s counting on us to get to the truth.

Nikki: I know, Richie, and I’m sorry. I’m sorry. (Pause) Maybe I can do some damage control, go back to James and say I overreacted and that I forgive him. And things can go back to the way they were.

Nina: That sounds like a good idea.

Marc: But don’t you think James will be suspicious?

Nina: No, I’m sure that I can be very convincing. I've managed to fool him so far.

Richie: And I’m sure you could continue if you had to. But don’t.

Nikki: What?

Richie: Don’t do it. Don’t go back to James.

Nikki: Why not? Like you said, we need to get the evidence to clear Nate and James seem to be the way to do it. I’ll just have to bite my tongue when he acts like a big jerk.

Richie: And how long do you think you’ll be able to do that? How long do you think it’ll be before he says something else that gets you so riled up?

Nikki: With James Greyhawk? Not long.

Richie: Exactly. So maybe we should just forget it. I don’t like you being around Greyhawk and since this started, things have been so tense between us. Maybe ending things with him is what we need to finally get back on track. This might be for the best.

Nikki was relieved to hear this. Especially since she had her doubts about James being guilty. He might be a jerk and a snob, but she just couldn’t buy that he was a killer. Of course she didn’t want to get into that with Richie; it would only lead into more problems between them. And then there were her feeling the jerk. There was something compelling about him. She couldn’t deny that to herself, though she’d never admit it to an egotist like Greyhawk. But whatever those feelings, they would only lead to trouble if she continued spending time with him. And cutting him for her life now was for the best, for herself, for everyone. And though she hadn’t realized it in the heat of the moment, that was the primary reason why she did what she did. Of course Richie, and everyone else, could never know that.

Nikki: But, if I do make a break from James, where does that leave us now? What is our next step?

Richie: I don’t know. But we better come up with something. Now that Nathan is recovering from his heart attack, he could be released any day now. And then his trial will be starting.

Nikki: Damn it! I’ve really blown it haven’t I?! Why did I let my temper get the best of me!?

Richie: That’s the effect that a guy like James Greyhawk has on people. He pushes people’s buttons. He certainly does mine. I guess he finally pushed yours.

Nikki: (thinking of her more close, intimate moments with James) Yes, I guess he did.

Harry: (walking in) There you are, Nikki.

Nikki: Harry! (She turned to look at Nina, who looked terrified at the sight of her father, and Harry’s eyes narrowed in to angry slits at the sight of her) You were looking for me?

Harry: (his gaze still leveled at his daughter) Yes.

Nikki: Why?

Harry: Your cousin A.J. is requesting that you join he and the rest of the family in the library.

Nikki: Why?

Harry: I don’t know, but he says it’s important that you come immediately.

Nikki: (concerned) Okay.

Richie: Do you want me to come with you?

Nikki: I…

Harry: (interrupting) A.J. said it was a family meeting.

Nikki: (barely hiding her annoyance) Sure. Richie, why don’t you wait here?

Richie: (concerned) Sure. I hope everything is okay.

Nikki: Me too. (Pause) I’ll be back as soon as I find out what’s going on. (Nikki walked out)

Harry: Nina, you really should be getting back to work; I think they might need your help in the kitchen.

Nina: (looking guilty) Yes, Father.

Nina walked out, followed a few moments later by Harry.

Marc: What was that all about?

Richie: I don’t know. I hope it’s not another problem.

Marc: Neither do I. We’ve got enough already. Like what we’re going to do. Do you really think it’s a good idea to change our plans? I thought Nikki’s access to Greyhawk was key to everything.

Richie: It was. But, Nikki’s being near Greyhawk was creating so much stress and conflict in our relationship. I love her and we have been through so much together. I know we came up with this plan for a reason, but I don’t want to lose Nikki in the process.

Marc: Okay, I understand that. You love her, you care about her and you want to repair your relationship. I get that. But what about us? What about Nathan? How do we clear Nathan’s name and make sure our secrets stay secrets? Or is it too late for that?

Richie: What do you mean?

Marc: The diary. We’re fairly sure that Candice wrote what she knew about us in her diary. It’s why we went to steal the damn thing so we could get it before Nikki or anyone else got their hands on it. But now someone else has it and that someone could be James. What if he was the one who stole the diary? If he reads it and Candice did write about us, he could go to the cops or God knows what else.

Richie: You’re right. But I doubt he’d do that.

Marc: Why? What’s stopping him?

Richie: Because if James stole the diary, it’s because he has his own secrets. I don’t think he’d be coming after us if he had his own mess to hide.

Marc: Maybe, but I don’t like the idea of him knowing anything. Even if he can’t use it against us.

Richie: Neither do I. But we don’t know if he has the diary… or if there is someone else out there who does.

Marc: And how are we going to find that out without Nikki being able to get close to James? If he does have the diary, that’s one thing, but there’s still the issue of making sure he pays for murdering Candice and Nathan goes free. How are we going to accomplish that?

Richie: Marc, I know you have a lot of questions… I have the same ones. But, I’m sorry, I don’t have any answers. Believe me I wish I did.

Janie and Jake were headed out of the ballroom, passing by Natalie and Barton, who were heading in.

Janie: So, now that you’ve dazzled me on the dance floor, what would you like to do next, Det. Collier?

Jake: Well, I’m afraid you’re not going to like my next suggestion.

Janie: Really? You haven’t done anything yet that I haven’t liked.

Jake: Well, you haven’t heard me out yet.

Janie: (crossing her arms) Go ahead.

Jake: How would you like to go for a drive.

Janie: A drive?

Jake: Yeah. It’s a beautiful night and this party, while fun, isn’t quite my speed. I don’t know… I think a little fresh air might be nice.

Janie: (nodding) Yes, it might at that.

Jake: And don’t worry, I’m not going to run out of gas or anything like that.

Janie: (grinning) Oh, well… I guess I’ll still go anyway.

She and Jake shared a laugh as Rev. David Collier, dressed in a tuxedo, approached, a distressed look on his face.

David: Jake, there you are.

Jake: Hey. (Pause) Dad, this is Janie Rios. Janie, this is Rev. David Collier, my Dad.

David: (shaking Janie’s hand) It’s nice to meet you, Miss Rios.

Janie: You too, Rev. Collier.

David: Jake, I’m sorry to interrupt, but I really need to talk to you.

Jake: Why? Dad, what’s wrong?

David: Your mother has been trying to get in touch with you, but your cell phone doesn’t seem to be working.

Jake: I’m afraid I let the battery die again. Why what’s happened? Is it bad news?

David: Yeah. Unfortunately, it is.

* * * * * *

Natalie Lassiter led her husband Barton out onto the terrace outside the ballroom, closing the door behind them. Jazzy music could be heard drifting out through the open windows.

Barton: Natalie, what is this all about? Why did you drag me out here?

Natalie: Barton, I’ve been looking all over for you. We need to talk.

Barton: Why? Or can I guess?

Natalie: I don’t know. What is it you think I want to discuss with you?

Barton: Kevin. And what happened earlier in the ballroom. I thought we'd hashed this out already, but guess you want another go around.

Natalie: Barton...

Barton: (sighing) I just wish you'd try and see things my way.

Natalie: And what way is that? You showed obvious disdain at Kevin’s being gay and proceeded to embarrass him, Dr. Sorensen and yourself. I think my vision is quite accurate.

Barton: You’re not going to cut me a break, are you?

Natalie: You mean am I going to tolerate you treating Kevin like a pariah? No, Barton, I won’t. I thought I've made it clear to you that I will not stand for this behavior. More importantly, I thought you were going to try and accept Kevin for who he is. You said just yesterday that you’d try and heal things between the two of you.

Barton: And I am.

Natalie: Really? Because I don’t think scenes like what happened in the ballroom are not going to accomplish that.

Barton: Look, I am sorry for what happened, okay? My behavior was wrong. I shouldn’t have let it happen. I saw Kevin and Dr. Sorensen together and I just reacted.

Natalie: How are reactions like that going to fix things between you and your son?

Barton: Look, I want to try and make things right with Kevin. I do. But it’s going to take some time. These things don’t happen overnight. I mean, if your father showed up after all these years after having deserted your family when you were a child, would you just be able to forgive and forget so quickly?

Natalie: (as a flicker of pain flashed in her eyes at the mention of her deadbeat dad) It wouldn’t be easy, that’s for sure. My father hurt our family in ways that you can’t begin to imagine when he just walked out and… (She stopped herself) Look, I’m not expecting years of conflict to turn into peace and harmony in an instant. But what I saw today shows me that you have a long way to go before you and Kevin can have a father/son relationship, before you can be a real parent to your child.

Barton: Or to any child? Is that what you’re really saying?

Natalie: Barton, I’m not saying anything. Don’t put words in my mouth.

Barton: Well, you have insisted that before we have a baby, I have to repair things with Kevin.

Natalie: You’re only hearing what you want to aren’t you? What I said was your relationship with Kevin raises serious questions about your ability as a parent. And yes, while seeing you and Kevin heal things between you is important, it doesn’t mean that doing so means we’re going to have our own baby.

Barton: But it’s a start.

Natalie: (exasperated) Barton…

Barton: Look, Natalie, I know you have your doubts, but I can be the kind of father you want me to be, the kind that you didn’t have, both to Kevin and our children. And I’m going to do what I have to prove it. I have already.

Natalie: What does that mean?

Barton: After what happened, I went to Kevin and Dr. Sorensen and I apologized for what I said. I told him that I was sorry and that I wanted to make amends for tonight... for everything.

Natalie: Well, that’s good. I just hope it works. There are a lot of hurts to be healed.

Barton: On both sides. I know this is hard for you believe, but Kevin isn’t perfect. He does play a part in our difficulties. He has to be willing to meet me halfway if this is going to work.

Natalie: You’re right. I know your relationship with him is contentious and I know that where you’re concerned, he’s hard to reach. But that isn’t his fault. Your relationship is what you made of it. It’s up to you to repair things.

Barton: You’re really putting the burden to bear on me?

Natalie: Yes, because that’s where it belongs. Your conflict with your son is the direct result of your inability to accept his being gay and that’s a fact. (Pause) Now look, you say you want to work it out and I trust that you will. You’re family and all you have is each other. You’ll work things out with Kevin just like you’ll work it out with your own father.

Barton: My father? Why did you bring him up?

Natalie: Well, I had a talk with him.

Barton: (frowning) Great. What did he have to say?

Natalie: Why do you assume it was something bad?

Barton: Experience.

Natalie: Well, you’d be wrong this time. My discussion with Adam was rather productive.

Barton: How so?

Natalie: I learned something about the business. Or rather you and Steven’s future at Lassiter Pharmaceuticals.

Barton: What did he tell you about that?

Natalie: That you have nothing to worry about. He didn’t come home with plans to return to the company. He has no intention of removing you and Steven as co-presidents.

Barton: What!? Are you certain?

Natalie: Yes. He assured me that he’s very happy with the work you and your brother have done. He doesn’t want to change anything.

Barton: That’s great news! Great! (He pulled Natalie in his arms, grinning) Thank you, Natalie. Thank you for telling me this. It’s quite a load off my mind.

Natalie: I thought it would be. That’s why I wanted to tell you right away. I know you’ve been worried about your job and like I told you, you have nothing to worry about.

Barton: It would seem so. Well, thank God something is going right for once.

At that moment, the terrace door opened and Harry stepped out.

Harry: I’m sorry to interrupt.

Barton: (annoyed) Harry! What is it!?

Harry: You’re needed in the library. Right away.

* * * * * *

Maggie DuBois-Lassiter looked up at her middle son, Steven, as they danced in the ballroom.

Maggie: Steven, I’d forgotten what a wonderful dancer you were. You’re quite good on your feet. That’s one talent you share with your father. (She made a point of glancing down at his swelled belly) Of course darling you’d be even better if you would stick to your diet.

Steven: (sighing, realizing he should’ve known it would be long before she started criticizing him about his weight problems) Mother, I’m doing my best. Dieting isn’t easy, you know.

Maggie: Yes, dear. I realize that. But maybe you could try harder. You simply have no will power when it comes to food. You never have, even as a child. We tried to monitor your food during meals here at the house, but I can’t tell you how many times you would sneak down to the kitchen after everyone had gone to bed and have midnight snacks. Or the maids would find you’d been buying food and hoarding it in your bedroom.

Steven: (embarrassed by her all too accurate recollections) Look, I know I have my weaknesses. But have you ever thought that maybe it might be in my genes?

Maggie: Certainly not. No one else in the family, on either side, has a weight problem, nor have they ever. I am not going to allow you to blame your flaws on heredity. That simply isn’t the case.

Steven: (sighing in defeat) All right, Mother, all right. I’ll try harder.

Maggie: You’ve said that many times, and you’ve even managed to lose weight. But you always gain it back. And as you get older that becomes less and less healthy. However, we’re really going to do it this time, my dear, especially now that I am here. No one else seems to be willing to help you so I guess it’s up to me.

Steven: (grimly, knowing she meant by ‘no one’ she meant Pamela) Thank you, Mother.

Maggie: Steven, there is no reason to look like the world is coming to an end.

Steven: Isn’t there? What about your sudden return home?

Maggie: What about it?

Steven: I’m sure you can tell it’s created some concern.

Maggie: I’m nothing if not observant, son. But I thought the ‘concern’ was on Barton’s part. I’d assumed you were happy to see your father and I?

Steven: I am. But that doesn’t mean that I’m not worried. Especially since you and Dad came back because you were upset about what’s been going on.

Maggie: Don’t you think we have reason? A.J. and Eric have their secrets splashed all over the front pages of the Covington Bay Times, embarrassing the family. Do you really think we need this just days before the stockholders meeting?

Steven: No. It’s the last thing we wanted. But, we had no idea about A.J.’s marriage to Patricia or Eric’s abhorrent behavior with Danny James and Nigel Greyhawk.

Maggie: Maybe? But what about Quentin Greyhawk? Weren’t you aware that he’d bought the Times?

Steven: (after a hesitation, he shook his head, sighing) No.

Maggie: And don’t you think you should have? Shouldn’t you and Barton have kept a closer eye on that man knowing how much he hates our family and wants to destroy us?

Steven: (shrugging) Maybe… I suppose.

Maggie: (in a mocking tone) You suppose? Is that the best you can do? You how know important it was to your father and I to watch his every move so we could stop whatever he was going to do to strike against us before it happened.

Steven: I realize that. But, things have been quiet on the Greyhawk front for years.

Maggie: Yes, but clearly the Greyhawks were biding their time and waiting for a moment to strike. And they found one.

Steven: I guess we got so involved in the day-to-day grind of running of the business that we put Greyhawk out of our mind.

Maggie: And now you realize what a mistake it was, what it has cost this family and what it could cost us in the future. I have no doubt that this fiasco with the newspaper is the first step in a plan to ruin our family.

Steven: (nodding; regretfully) Yes, I know. And I’m sorry. It shouldn’t have happened.

Maggie: No, it shouldn’t have.

Steven: I don’t like disappointing you. You put Barton and me in charge not just of the company, but also of the family and we let you down. I wish we could’ve lived up to the faith you placed in us.

Maggie: I wish the same thing, Steven. (Pause) But, the damage is done and we all have to live with it. It’s where we go from here and the steps we take next that are important.

Steven: I understand. So what does happen next? I mean, I assume you and Dad came home so he could take over at L.P.

Maggie: Really? Is that what you think?

Steven: Yes, of course. What else could it be? But, what I don’t understand is what this party has to do with it and why you invited the Greyhawks.

Maggie: In other words, you want to know what I plan to announce tonight.

Steven: Sure. I talked to Dad and even he doesn’t know what this is all about. He said this whole thing, including the decision to come home early, was your doing.

Maggie: (nodding) Yes, it was. Your father just came along for the ride as it were. It’s going to be a surprise to him as well.

Steven: Well, when are you going to tell us?

Maggie: Soon, very soon. You and I aren’t quite finished yet.

Steven: With what? Talking about the business?

Maggie: No, let’s discuss your daughter.

Steven: Nikki? Mother, I know you're upset over what's been going on with her; you think I've been too lenient.

Maggie: Actually, I think I may gotten a little perspective on the issue of your daughter.

Steven: Such as?

Maggie: Well, I’ve spoken with her. And she’s upset at what she considers rather harsh punishment that you and Pamela have inflicted upon her.

Steven: I guess she would be. No teenager likes to be grounded.

Maggie: Especially when all she did was try and help a friend. Wasn’t she grounded because she attended the murder trial of Nathan James?

Steven: Yes, but she skipped a day of school to do it.

Maggie: According to Nikki it was only a couple of classes.

Steven: Okay, so it was just a couple of classes.

Maggie: Which I’m not excusing. But she only did it to help a friend and to support that young man she’s been dating. Nikki is an excellent student so there was no real harm done.

Steven: Probably not.

Maggie: And I’ll bet that Nikki has already made up the work she missed and promised not to let it happen again.

Steven: As for the work, I’m sure she’s taken care of it. Nikki’s smart enough not to let anything jeopardize her studies. How can we be sure she’s telling the truth about letting this be the first and last time?

Maggie: You’re not willing to give her the benefit of the doubt? Steven, when did you start being so suspicious? That isn’t like you. This isn’t like you at all.

Steven: Mother, this is a complete turnaround from our earlier discussion. You basically said Pamela and I were letting her run wild and that we were prime examples of bad parenting.

Maggie: Dear, I’m sure I wasn’t that dramatic. But, as I said, I've gotten some perspective.

Steven: Well, I’ve always thought Nikki was very persuasive in getting what she wants, but I never thought she’d be able to pull one over on you.

Maggie: (her brows raised in annoyance) And how has she done that? I’m not excusing what the girl has done. As I said earlier, you and Pamela have reason to be concerned. But I feel that punishing her so harshly for helping and supporting a friend isn’t the answer. You don’t want to teach Nikki loyalty and compassion, even if a bit misguided, is going to lead to being penalized.

Steven: Mother, that’s not exactly the case. It’s not just that Nikki skipped school. As well informed as you may be, you don’t know that she has defied her mother and I and lied to us on more than one occasion. And just the other night she snuck out of the house and wouldn’t say where she’d been. Surely you don’t think we should tolerate such behavior. You wouldn’t from us, would you?

Maggie: No, but I think I have always been fair with you boys and taken the circumstances of any situation under consideration before deciding how to act. Steven, you were always the good child and I never had to worry about you. You’ve always known how to behave yourself. But when Barton and Johnnie got in their share of messes and your father and I just didn’t send them up to their room in response, did I?

Steven: No. (He grinned) If you had they’d be spending a lot of time in their rooms.

Maggie: Tis true. (Pause) I’m just surprised that you felt grounding her is the only solution you could think of. (She paused) Or is it the only thing Pamela could think of?

Steven: Mother…

Maggie: (pressing) Grounding Nikki was Pamela’s idea, wasn’t it?

Steven: (after a hesitation) Yes, it was.

Maggie: I’m not surprised. I love and respect your wife, but she can be reactionary.

Steven: I agreed to support her decision.

Maggie: Yes, you supported her, but did you agree with her decision? There is the difference. Steven, you really should just take a stand and tell her that she is wrong

Steven: (looking trapped) Mother, I…

Voice: Mind if I interrupt?

Steven: (looking up at his wife, panic deepening in his eyes) Pamela! Pamela, look…

Pamela: (glaring at Maggie) How dare you!

Maggie: What?!

Pamela: How dare you interfere in my family!

Maggie: Pamela, dear, calm down. I know you don’t care for constructive criticism, but there’s no need to let your temper get the best of you.

Pamela: You have only been back home a few hours and already you’ve got both your sons upset and angry. And you’re once again you’re only giving your opinion on matters that are none of your business, but interfering in how I raise my child. You’ve gotten up to speed quickly, I’ll give you that much.

Steven: Pamela, please… let’s not do this now. This isn’t the place or the time.

Pamela: Really? This seems to be the place for your mother to tell you what she thinks. Why can’t I?

At that moment, Barton, Natalie and Harry approached.

Barton: (snarkily) Well, this looks like an interesting scene.

Pamela: Barton, butt out!

Barton: I’d prefer to have a ringside seat, but whatever is going on will have to wait.

Pamela: I have no intention of waiting for anything!

Steven: Pamela, I really don’t think…!

Harry: I’m sorry. I don’t want to interrupt this family… discussion, but Barton is right. For now, it’s important that we all go the library.

Maggie: Why? Harry, what is going on?

Harry: I’m afraid you’ll have to let A.J. tell you.

* * * * * *

Facing his family in the library, A.J.’s ominous words filled the room and a deafening silence followed. He looked over his family and saw a myriad of reactions. Adam gasped as Maggie’s hands went to her lips, her eyes filled with horror. Steve shook his head in denial and Pamela hugged him for emotional support. Nikki’s lips trembled, tears pooling in her eyes.

Natalie: Kevin is dead?

A.J.: (insistently) No, he’s not dead!

Natalie: But you said…

A.J.: That he hadn’t been found yet. But the Coast Guard is looking for him. And they’ll find him. He isn’t dead.

Steven: But it doesn’t look good, does it? You said that Monica and Danny James barely survived. Do you really think that Kevin has a chance?

A.J.: What I think is that I am not giving up. Kevin is out there and I know it.

Steven: Eric didn’t see any sign of Kevin?

A.J.: No. He was concerned with bringing Danny James in so I doubt he even tried. You know how he feels about Kevin; he could care less whether he lives or dies. But Kevin is alive. He’s just waiting for us to find him. And we will. I won’t stop until we do.

Barton: You said that this Danny James stole jewels from my and Natalie’s bedroom?

A.J.: Yes. Apparently, there was anonymous phone call stating that. It’s how the police got on Danny’s trail.

Barton: And the jewels were found in the car he used to get away?

A.J.: Yes.

Barton: I don’t believe this! That bastard comes into our house under the pretense of working and steals from us!?

Natalie: I don’t think that’s really important under the circumstances, Barton.

Barton: There were some very valuable things there, Natalie. We better get upstairs and see what’s been taken.

Jake: (walking in) I’m afraid I can’t let you do that.

A.J.: Jake. (He turned to his lifelong friend, seeing the pained expression on his face) You heard about Kevin.

Jake: (nodding grimly) I did. I can’t believe it. I just saw him a little while ago with Dr. Sorensen. Something like this, happening so fast, it’s just incredible.

A.J.: That’s one word for it.

Jake: I’m sorry for you… for all of you. But I’ve spoken to Capt. Stone and he says there are a lot of people looking for Kevin. They will find him.

A.J.: Oh, I know we’ll find him. You can be sure of that. (Pause) Thank you, Jake. I’m glad you stopped by.

Jake: (giving A.J.’s arm a comforting squeeze) Hey, I’ve known Kevin all my life. He’s a friend, a good friend. It’s important to me too that he comes home safe. (Pause) I wish I could say I’m here just for support, but I’m working.

Maggie: Working?

Jake: Yes, I had planned to go to the hospital and check on my Mom and see how Nathan is, but I contacted Capt. Stone and he wants me to handle the robbery investigation.

Barton: Is that why we can’t go into our bedroom?

Jake: Yes.

Barton: But I don’t understand what there is to investigate.

Jake: A lot, starting with your bedroom, Mr. Lassiter. It’s now a crime scene. I’ve called the lab so we can go over the room and see if there’s any evidence linking Danny James to the theft.

Barton: What do you mean evidence? I would think there would be plenty of evidence against this man. Like finding the jewels in his car, not to mention his trying to escape and kidnapping Monica Greyhawk and Kevin. And then there’s the death of my son. I’d think that would be all the evidence you would need to nail this piece of scum!

Natalie: (grabbing Barton’s arm) Barton…

Angrily, Barton turned away, going to the window. Natalie looked as if to follow, but instead, turned back to Jake.

Natalie: I’m sorry about that, Jake.

Jake: There is no need to apologize. I understand his anger.

Natalie: Thank you. As for the case, do what you need to and we’ll help in anyway we can.

Jake: Thank you. We’ll want to talk to you later, as well as possibly some of the guests to see if they may have seen anything. (Pause) And we might need you to come down to the station and identify what was taken.

Natalie: Of course.

Maggie: I understand you have a job to do, Jake, but do you really need to have your investigators coming through the house and questioning our guests? I doubt if any of them had anything to do with the crime.

Jake: Probably not, but someone may have seen something that can help. Look, I know it’s inconvenient, but we’ll handle it as best as we can.

Adam: We know you will, Jake.

Jake: Excuse me. (Jake walked out)

A.J.: Well, on that note, I need to get going.

Nikki: Where?

A.J.: I’m going to join the search.

Maggie: A.J., that isn’t a good idea.

A.J.: Look, I don’t want to hear any disagreements or nay saying. I got enough from Melody. (Pause) I just came by here to give you the news; I didn’t want you hearing it on the news or something. (Pause) I’ll call as soon as I have some news.

Maggie: (as A.J. headed for the door) A.J…. A.J. wait a minute.

A.J.: (stopping and turning) Grandmother, not now. I have to go.

Maggie: A.J., you can give your grandmother a minute.

A.J.: (impatiently) Okay, go ahead.

Maggie: Look, I know that you love Kevin. You’ve had a very tight bond since you were children. Your desire to help is only natural; we all wish we could do something. And while joining the search may be admirable, do you think it’s wise?

A.J.: What’s unwise about wanting to be there for family? You and Granddad taught me how important family is and that sometimes you have to take risks for them.

Maggie: And I stand by that. But for all your talents, A.J., and they are many, you are not a professional search and rescue expert. You should leave these things to the people who know how to handle them.

A.J.: Grandmother, I know what I’m doing.

Maggie: Really? Because I don’t recall you joining the Coast Guard. You have no idea what to do or where to go or how to start looking. You could get in the way or make matters worse.

A.J.: Look, I appreciate your concern, but I can handle myself. I know what I’m doing.

Maggie: A.J….

Adam: (grasping his wife by the arm as if to silence her) A.J., be careful. And call us as soon as you know anything.

A.J.: (as he walked out) I will.

Maggie: Adam, you should have let me stop him.

Adam: Dear, as formidable as you may be, I don’t think you could have. A.J.’s not the kind of man who can stand still, you know that.

Maggie: (nodding) He’s as headstrong as his father was and look what happened to him.

Tears rolling down her cheeks, Nikki turned to her mother.

Nikki: Mom, this is awful. It’s terrible. Kevin can’t be dead… he just can’t! This can’t happen, not now! He’s suffered so much in his life. I saw him tonight with Dr. Sorensen and he seemed so happy, happier than he’s been in a long time. How could this happen after all he’s been through?

Pamela: (hugging her daughter) I’m sorry, Nikki. I’m sorry honey.

Nikki: It’s not fair. It’s just not fair!

Pamela: Nikki, we have hope. And we have to hold onto that.

Steven: And we have A.J.. If anyone can do something to bring Kevin home, he can.

Nikki: Oh, I hope so. (Pause as realization flickered in her eyes) Oh, I’ve got to go!

Steven: Nikki, where are you going?

Nikki: To Richie!

Pamela: Richie?

Nikki: I’ve got to tell him about Kevin before he hears in some other way. (Pause) He was just saying how close he and Kevin used to be and how much he missed him. He’s going to be devastated.

Pamela: Nikki, maybe you should let someone else tell him the news.

Nikki: No, I have to do it. Richie isn’t close to his father; you know how Captain Stone felt about Kevin. (Pause) Richie’s mother is out of the country. And he hasn’t seen much of Melissa lately. Someone has to be there for him. I guess that someone is me.

Pamela: Do you really want to drive to his house this late?

Nikki: I don’t have to. He’s here.

Pamela: He’s here!? Why?

Nikki: He came late to the party. (Pause) Look, I’ve got to get to him. I want him to hear this from me.

Pamela: Certainly dear. But when you find him, come back here, bring him with you if you must. The family should be together now.

Nikki: I’ll try.

Nikki walked out, passing by Harry in the doorway.

Harry: I’m sorry to interrupt, but Master Jonas is calling from Washington.

Steven: Jonas is calling at this hour?

Harry: It seems to be rather urgent. He sounds rather upset.

Pamela: (alarmed, looking at Steven) Oh my God! Do you think he’s heard the news all the way in DC?

Steven: He probably knows. The possible death of the relative of a U.S. senator is going to spread very quickly.

Pamela: Let’s go talk to him. Excuse us, everyone.

Maggie: (as Steven and Pamela walked out, Harry following) Send him our love. (She turned and saw Natalie approaching Barton as he stood near the window) Adam, we should…

Adam: No. Let Natalie handle it. She is his wife. He’ll want to turn to her more than anyone else right now.

Natalie approached her husband.

Natalie: Barton? Barton? (Pause) I know this is tough news; the worst news a parent could hear. I couldn’t begin to understand what you’re going through… how you’re feeling.

Turned away from her, Barton didn’t respond. All she could see was his heaving shoulders and his agonized sighs.

Barton turned to his wife and she was stunned to see his eyes and face red, tears streaming down his face.

Barton: What is wrong with me?

Natalie: What?

Barton: What is wrong with me? What kind of man am I?

Natalie: I don’t understand. What do you mean?

Barton: I get this terrible news about my son and all I can do is rage about some stolen jewelry? How could I even think about that?

Natalie: You were shocked. You still are. And that shock is causing you to not think clearly. Of course the jewels don’t matter.

Barton: No they don’t. You have to believe that, Natalie. You have to.

Natalie: I do. I know that Kevin is the most important thing right now.

Barton: I know it’s hard to believe. And I know it’s late in coming, but I can’t lose him. I can’t lose my son. He’s all I have left. What am I going to do if Kevin is dead?

Natalie: Let’s not think like that. We don’t know anything yet. And until we hear from A.J. or the Coast Guard or the police we have to remain positive.

Barton: I want to, but you heard A.J.. It just doesn’t look good. Like A.J. said, Danny James and Monica Greyhawk barely survived. At this point Kevin has been in the water at night for hours. Does he even have a chance?

Natalie: Yes. He has a chance. We have to believe he does and hold on to that.

Barton: I want to. But Natalie, maybe I’m getting what I deserve.

Natalie: How could you deserve this?

Barton: I haven’t been the kind of father Kevin needed. I haven’t been anything to him but an adversary for years.

Natalie: Barton, no…

Barton: Natalie, you’ve lived in this house long enough to know what things between Kevin and I are like. I’ve treated him with nothing but scorn and derision. There was a time when we were close, but since he was sixteen and I learned that he was gay, that’s all changed. From that moment I’ve done everything I could to drive him out of my life. (Pause) The irony is I finally realize I have been wrong for all these years. I need my son. I need him in my life. And he could be gone. I lost Brandon to his madness; he is going to be institutionalized for the rest of his life. And now I could lose Kevin. I will have lost both of my children. And if that happens, I have no one to blame but myself.

Natalie: Barton, please. Now is not the time to let guilt get to you. I know you’re upset about the things that have gone on with you and Kevin in the past, but we can’t dwell on that. Not now. It’s not going to help anything.

Barton: Of course I should feel guilty. You’ve only seen a taste of how I have treated Kevin. It’s nothing compared to the past. No wonder he’s hated me and didn’t believe a word I said when I wanted to reconcile with him. Who could blame him? I destroyed any trust he had for me. I guess the truth is I just didn’t deserve the chance to rebuild things between us.

Natalie: Barton, I know there’s a lot of different emotions you’re feeling right now. Pain, guilt, remorse, anger and more. Who could blame you? But just know that whatever happens, I’m here for you. I love you. And whatever happens, we will get through this. I’ll do whatever I can help you, I promise.

Barton: (sweeping his wife into his arms) I know you will, Natalie. Thank God I have you. I know I can count on you to be there when I need you… for whatever I need you.

And as Natalie held her husband, rubbing his back in comfort, she didn’t see the wicked smile that slid across his lips nor the malicious glint in his dark eyes.

* * * * * *

A.J. Lassiter climbed into his car, shoving the keys into the ignition and bringing the car to life. His heart pounded in his chest and he could feel the emotion welling in his throat. The tears pooled in his eyes and he fought desperately to push them back. Now wasn’t the time to cry. Now wasn’t the time to let his feelings get to him. It wasn’t even the time to think. He just simply needed to do what needed to be done to bring Kevin home safe and sound. The problem was A.J. didn’t know where to begin; his grandmother was right about that. But A.J. had never let little technicalities like that get in his way in the past; he wasn't about to start now.

As he reached for the ignition to turn the key, his cell phone rang. He reached into the jacket pocket of his tuxedo and flipped the phone open to answer it.

A.J.: Lassiter.

Voice: Hello, A.J., ready to play?

A chill snaked up and down A.J.'s spine as he quickly recognized the voice. But didn't someone always recall the voice of a person who'd tried to murder them? A.J. still felt the aches and pains from the injuries he's suffered avoiding the speeding car that had nearly run him over. It was just a few hours ago that this person had called him, claiming to have murdered Candice and telling A.J. he'd give him the chance to catch him; at the risk of his own life of course. He had said he'd be calling tonight and with all that had gone on, A.J. had forgotten about it. And it was something he certainly didn't want to deal with now, not with Kevin's life on the line.

A.J.: (gasping) It's you.

Voice: (ripe with malice) You sound surprised to hear from me. You were expecting my call, weren't you?

A.J.: Yes, but...

Voice: But what?

A.J.: I just didn't expect you right now.

Voice: I suppose now would be inconvenient, with your cousin Kevin having disappeared and presumed dead. I'm sorry; must be difficult.

A.J.: (startled) You did know about Kevin?

Voice: Haven’t you turned on the television or listened to the radio? It's all over the news.

A.J.: (realizing that by now that would be the case) I see.

Voice: Look, I know you're worried about him, but you surely wouldn't let that get in the way of solving your stepsister's murder. We do have an agreement, don’t we?

A.J. hesitated. He wanted to just hang up and go after Kevin. A.J. refused to believe he was dead; he was just waiting to be found. And A.J. didn’t like the idea of just deserting the search before it even started. Yet, there were people looking for Kevin and they certainly had more resources than he did. He had committed himself to finding Candice’s killer. He owed it to his stepsister, to his family and to Nathan, who nearly died more than once as a result of being accused of this murder. Bad timing or not, and as much as he hated being at the mercy of this psycho, A.J. couldn't let this chance slip through his fingers. He was completely sure if this guy's claims were true, but A.J. instincts told him there was something going on here that he couldn't afford to ignore.

Voice: A.J.? Are you there?

A.J.: Yes, I’m here. And we do have an agreement. (Pause) But how do I know you killed Candice? Do you have any proof?

Voice: You'll have all the proof you need when and if you catch me.

A.J.: So I'm just supposed to take your word for it?

Voice: You've never taken a leap of faith?

A.J.: In someone who has confessed to a murder and tried to kill me once today? Why should I?

Voice: You're right. Why should you? But you simply have no choice. You'll just have to trust me. (Pause as he chuckled sarcastically) Look, if you'd rather not catch your stepsister's killer, not to mention saving another life, just say so and I'll end it here.

A.J.: (startled) Saving another life? What are you saying?

Voice: That if you are lucky enough to catch me and survive, you'll not only find your sister's killer, you'll get the added bonus of rescuing another potential victim.

A.J.: (his heart racing) You're threatening to kill someone else.

Voice: Believe me, it's no threat. I'm quite serious. It is completely within your power to stop this killing... to stop all the killings.

A.J.: All the killings? What....

Voice: Let's not get ahead of ourselves. I know there's much you don't understand, but it will all soon become very clear. So why don't you gather that lovely wife of yours and meet me as planned.

A.J.: My wife? (Pause) Patricia!?

Voice: Yes, your wife. I'm sure you haven't forgotten her already.

A.J.: Look, why don't we leave Patricia out of this? You've got me. There is really no reason for her to be involved.

Voice: Except that I want her involved.

A.J.: Why does she have to be part of this?

Voice: Because I say so. This isn't up for discussion. We'll either do it my way or not at all.

A.J.: That’s awfully fifth grade of you.

Voice: Look, if you don’t like the rules, then let’s forget the whole thing. (Pause) I just hope your family doesn't find out you have the chance to catch Candice's murderer, and was unwilling to take a few little risks.

A.J.: (gnashing his teeth, hating that this was so out of his control) All right! You win... You've got me.... and Patricia.

Voice: (delightfully) Splendid!

A.J.: So let’s get this underway. We will be ready to meet you. Just say where and when.

* * * * * *

Monica turned to Hillary as she hung up the pay phone in the fifth floor corridor of Covington Bay Medical Center.

Monica: Well, it was nice to be able to give Dad some good news. He must’ve asked me about a thousand times if I was sure I was all right.

Hillary: And he won’t be happy until he sees you for himself, right?

Monica: Nope. (Pause) He’s going to drop by the mansion the first thing when he gets home in the morning.

Hillary: And fuss over you ruthlessly. I hope you’re ready.

Monica: As much as I'd enjoy it, I don’t have time to let Dad fuss over me. I’ve got a husband to take care of and a daughter to look after.

Hillary: Maybe, but you could do with a little pampering.

Monica: And I’ll spend a day at the spa when things die down in about a year or so. I’m so glad we didn’t have to put him through…

Hillary: (nodding) I know. So am I. We came so close to telling him about what happened.

Monica: (wryly) I guess I came back from the dead in the nick of time.

Hillary: Don’t joke. That isn’t funny. You can’t imagine how it felt (she started to tear up) when we thought we lost you.

Monica: (hugging Hillary) Oh, Hillary, I’m sorry. (Pause) I was indulging in a little poorly timed black humor. (Pause) I thought I could use a laugh or two after today, even if it’s a bad joke. I’m so tired laughing is about all I can do.

Hillary: Then maybe you should go home and rest.

Monica: I plan to after I say goodnight to Nigel and see that he’s finally in bed.

Hillary: But maybe you should go down to the ER and see Dr. Madison first. You really should get yourself checked out.

Monica: Hillary, I’m fine. I’m a little wet and ragged, but it’s nothing that a hot shower and a good night’s sleep won’t cure.

Hillary: I’m sure, but we’d all feel better if you’d just…

Monica: Look, I have an appointment with Dr. Bennett in the morning. She’s going to give me a complete physical so if there’s anything wrong, which I doubt, we’ll find out then.

Hillary: You’re seeing your OBGYN tomorrow morning? Why?

Monica: I told you that Nigel and I are planning on having children. We just wanted to make sure everything is okay.

Hillary: (curiously) So you’re going ahead with the baby plans?

Monica: I--- I don’t know. I guess so. I’d like to think that we go on as planned. (Pause) You probably think I’m a fool for even considering it under the circumstances, for pretending that everything is the same with my husband and me.

Hillary: Well, have you had the chance to talk to him about what has happened tonight?

Monica: You mean between he and Kevin?

Hillary: Yes.

Monica: Hillary, I hardly think now is the time to get into that. Nigel was devastated when he heard about Kevin. He was inconsolable; I doubt he’s going to be able to sleep tonight as much as I encouraged him to do so. How can I ask him about his feelings about Kevin when the man could be dead? (Pause) But then, maybe I don’t need to ask him anything. Maybe I already know the answer.

Hillary: Meaning?

Monica: Do you know why I was with Kevin? Why I was running from him when Danny James grabbed me?

Hillary: No, but I can guess.

Monica: I confronted Kevin. I demanded to know why he and Nigel had spent so much time together alone at the party, why they left the party together, and what was going on when we walked into Nigel’s hospital room and found them together. In short, I wanted to know if my husband was about to leave me to be with the man he’s been in love with since they were teenagers.

Hillary: And? What did Kevin say?

Monica: He said.... (she stopped, shaking her head) Hillary, I can’t talk about this now. It’s wrong.

Hillary: What do you mean it’s wrong?

Monica: It’s wrong to discuss this, to be so envious and jealous of Kevin and his relationship with my husband when Kevin could be dead and when Nigel is so ripped apart. I can’t think about that, not now. How could I be so selfish?

Hillary: Monica, you’re not being selfish by thinking about your pain, what you’ve gone through. You love your husband and you don’t want to lose him.

Monica: Right now I’m grateful that my husband is alive. And that I’m alive to be there for him for whatever happens. The rest, whatever that is, really isn’t important right now. (Pause) I’m going to go to Nigel’s room and do what I can to get him to get some rest before I go home and hold my little girl. Hopefully that’ll make us both feel better.

Hillary: Okay. You want me to come with you?

Monica: No. I’ll be okay. If you can wait around awhile you can drive me home later.

Hillary: Of course. I’m going to try and see if I can find out where Angela has gotten off too. For her to have vanished like this… well, let’s not worry until we have to.

Monica: Let’s hope we don’t have anything to worry about. (Pause) I’ll see you soon.

Monica walked away, wishing she could unload on Hillary, tell her how she was feeling, reveal her fears about the future of her marriage. But she couldn’t bring herself to think about what might happen if Kevin returned and he and Nigel were reunited after having nearly lost each other to death, especially given all they'd been through together tonight. And moreover, she couldn’t think about what it might mean to her marriage if Kevin didn’t survive and was no longer a part of their lives. She hated herself for even considering it. Those thoughts, God help her, bordered on evil.

She arrived at Nigel’s room, and after steeling herself with a calming breath, she pushed the door open… and gasped at the sight that greeted her. Or rather what didn’t greet her. Nigel’s bed was empty, as was the closet that had held Nigel’s clothes that been brought over from the mansion earlier that evening. As she walked in, she saw the slip of folded paper sitting on the nightstand with her name on it. She picked it up, noting her name was written in Nigel’s clean and bold handwriting. She opened it. There were only two words there that conveyed a simple message: “I’m sorry”.

As she clutched it in her hand, tears rolled down her cheeks. Nigel didn't need to write where he'd gone; she instinctively knew. She also knew what it meant for her marriage. She could fool herself no longer.

* * * * * *

Nigel Greyhawk tossed the blanket, first aid kit, food and other supplies in the back of the SUV and slammed the trunk close before climbing into the car. He started it and drove away from the Greyhawk Mansion, certain no one had seen him slip into the house, grab the things he needed and slip back out. He didn’t want to have to answer any questions, get into where was going and why. Though at this point he didn’t care what he had to do or what he had to say. His father, the rest of his family, all of Covington Bay, hell the whole world could know and he wouldn’t give a damn. Nothing and no one was going to stop him from doing what he was going to do, what he had to do. There was only one thing he cared about right now.

Nigel: I’m coming for you, Kevin. Wherever you are, I’m coming.
